Criteria for Selecting the Best Camping Knife

When choosing the best camping knife, there are several features to mention. The first feature is blade strength. It’s important for a camping knife to have solid blade strength so that the knife blade does not chip over time, thereby shortening the life of the knife. Blade strength is also important to prevent the knife from becoming dull. Certain types of blade materials are known for lasting longer and also keeping blades sharper for longer periods of time. The second feature that we looked at was comfortable grip. We wanted to only highlight camping knives whose grips were comfortable. This is because often when using a nice to cut a rope or cut down firewood or fillet fish, the repetitive motion can actually cause soreness or blisters. So we wanted to make sure that either than knife itself had an ergonomic grip and/or some sort of comfortable rubber material. The third feature that we looked at was ease of use. How easy is it to open and close the blade? Some blades are easy enough to open with just one finger. Others require a two-handed open. And then, in other instances, the knife is housed in a sheath. We just wanted to make sure that it’s easy to get to your knife and open it quickly so that it’s not in the way. And the fourth feature is security. Obviously, when dealing with camping, it’s not uncommon to be around people. And even if you’re by yourself, we just want to make sure that the knives that you use are actually secure. So we looked at things such as clip and sheath safety. We also looked at whether or not the knife would be easy to accidentally open or slide out of its sheath. All of these elements factored in to how secure we rated each knife.

Pros

  • Semi-serrated blade

  • Index flipper
  • 3.1 inch blade

Cons

  • Hard to close with thumb
  • Small blade
The Smith & Wesson Extreme Ops SWA24S is a great camping. knife and will make a great addition to your trip. The thing I love most about this knife is simply its appearance. It looks extra cool with the dark blade inside the dark casing. In addition to the serrated edges, I also love the clip. This is perfect for tacking onto your pants or your belt or even your camping gear. I find that having a clip makes it a lot easier way to quickly grab the blade. The blade is semi-serrated on both sides. It has a saw top as well. The serrated edges will make it easy to cut rope and other sorts of rugged activities. The knife also has a thumb knob to open the knife quickly with – you guessed it – your thumb.

Now the knife blade is only 3.1 inches which can be limiting for some sorts of camping tasks. It is a little bit hard to close just with your thumb, and it often takes two hands to actually close the life.

However, in general, this is an amazing little knife and will be perfect for your camping trip. If you’re looking for something compact and efficient and effective, then you’re gonna really love this knife.

Pros

  • 15-inch blade
  • Comes with firestarters
  • Saw back
  • Soft rubber handle
  • Nylon sheath

Cons

  • Firestarter not great
  • Heavy
The Mossy Oak 15-Inch Survival Knife is for serious campers who intend to do some heavy-duty work at the campsite. At 15 inches, this is a massive knife compared to the other knives that made this list. With this knife, you can cut through dense woods. You can filet your own fish. You can even protect yourself or your family. The knife comes with a fire starter and a sharpener. This is handy when you’re in the woods and it’s time to build a campfire. You can use it in combination with your knife to start your own fire. And over time, as the blade becomes duller and duller, you can use the knife sharpener.

We just love the soft rubber handle, especially when we’re doing heavy-duty activities. The rubber handle will help protect your skin so that you don’t develop blisters. It also helps actually keep the knife in your hand. Slipping is never good! We also like the nylon sheath death the knife came with. This allows you to keep it in a safe place while not in use. The sheath also allows you to safely transport the knife as you’re out and about in the woods.

Now, keep in mind that the fire starter and the knife sharpener are not top quality. After all, you’re purchasing a knife, not a fire starter and not a knife sharpener. So you kind of get what you pay for here, and we would just recommend doing a little upfront planning. If you do expect that you’re gonna need to start a fire, it could be smart to have a backup fire starter in hand. Or if you expect that you’re going to do lots of “knifely” activities for days on end, then certainly you would want to have your own knife sharpener.

All in all, we’re a huge fan of The Mossy Oak 15-Inch Survival Knife. And if you’re looking for a serious camping knife, this is definitely one of our top-ranking knives, and we totally recommend it

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Foldable
  • Easy to spot in dark

Cons

  • Sheath quality average
  • Two-handed close
The Gerber Bear Grylls Folding Sheath Knife is synonymous with quality. So for the money, this is really an excellent knife that has a wonderful blade. It is definitely super durable, and it comes from a brand that we know in trust. So right off the bat that’s one of the things we like is just the quality of the knife. Another cool little feature that is possibly by accident on the part of the knife maker but is that it’s easy to spot in the dark. Because there are orange accents across the knife, then when it’s dusk or even nighttime, we can easily find the knife. If it’s buried under something, just seeing that little orange tip of the handle makes it easy to find.

It does come with a sheath, so you can fold the knife down and put it in the sheath. The sheath itself is mildew resistant. That is a great feature because any time you’re out camping, there is typically water, whether that’s dew, or rain, or just run of the mill water spillage. So the fact that it’s mildew resistant is kind of cool.

As with most of these other knives, the blade is semi-serrated. This gives you a little bit more flexibility as you’re using the knife for various things, like cutting rope or even trying to cut down some twigs.

To wrap up, we loved the Gerber knife, and we totally recommend it. We think if you’re looking for a great camping knife that is just very well rounded, you’re gonna really like the Gerber knife.

  • Security 96% 96%

Pros

  • One hand open

  • Locks open
  • Build-in clip
  • Ergonomic

Cons

  • Not spring-assisted
  • Two-handed close
The Atomic Bear Folding Knife knife is super cool just as with the Smith and Wesson we just reviewed. We love the look of the Atomic Bear, because it has a really dark-colored blade inside of a dark casing. It just makes you feel a couple of degrees cooler when you use it. The other thing that we love and can’t get enough of is the thumb switch. It’s extremely to quickly pull the blade out into ready position. Now the knife is not spring-loaded, so it has a little bit of resistance when you use your thumb. But the upside is that it is fully legal in all 50 states. So we’re willing to trade a little bit of that spring action for something that’s legal everywhere (in the U.S.). We also like the semi-serrated blade to up the flexibility on the type of activities that we can use with the knife for. This could mean carving or sawing activities.

We also love that the knife locks open. This helps it stay in place and is a pretty handy little feature when you’re using the knife quite a bit. This knife also has a built-in clip, so you can easily put it on your pants or anywhere handy.
The only negative is it is a little hard to close. You can’t just use one hand to open and close which can become tedious after a while.
Overall, if you’re looking for a great little camping knife, this is definitely a solid decision, and we totally recommend it.

Cons

The Morakniv Companion Fixed Blade Outdoor Knife is truly one of craftsmanship. It was made in Sweden and it is extremely popular among campers. This knife is going to last you a really long time due to the quality of the blade. Now the blade itself is not serrated, whereas all of the other knives we reviewed do have some sort of serrated edge. However, don’t let that make you think that this knife cannot do all sorts of helpful activities. The knife can carve wood, it can tender wood for fires. It can cut would, and it can do all sorts of food preparation.

The knife does come with a plastic sheath that is very handy. The sheath is going to keep the knife edge damage, as well as keep you safe from the knife.

The knife blade is corrosion-resistant, meaning it’s going to last you a really long time. You’ll really like the friction grip handle. That’s one of the things that we love most about it. When you’re doing the type of cutting that this knife is made for, your hands can get a little bit sore, and the handle really makes that a lot more comfortable.

So to wrap up, we would definitely recommend this knife for your next camping trip. You’re going to use this for many years to come. And I think you’ll find that it can a great many of the needs that you may have during your camping trip.
