Overview

If you’re looking for a heavy duty camping chair, you’ve come to the right place! Our team has reviewed tons of chairs to find only those that are truly heavy-duty and designed to last for the long haul. Check out our Quick Guide below, or read our in-depth product reviews.

Criteria For Selecting Heavy Duty Camping Chairs

The first criteria we looked at in shortlisting our selection is frame durability. Frame durability is key to ensuring a chair really is heavy duty. Materials like steel help ensure a long-lasting chair, even if it makes the chair a bit heavier. The second criteria is weight capacity. Many chairs have nice, solid, steel frames, but their weight capacities can vary widely. With only one exception (the MOON LENCE), we required chairs to have over a 300 pound capacity. The third criteria is fabric strength, which is super importance, since – call us crazy – but we would argue that you can’t really sit on a chair whose fabric is ripped apart! Lastly, comfort is still an important criteria, even if it doesn’t reflect how heavy-duty a chair is. We want you to find these chairs comfortable to sit in too. We hope you enjoy our shortlist, and happy camping!

Products In-Depth

  • Frame Durability 100% 100%
  • Weight Capacity 100% 100%
  • Fabric Strength 91% 91%
  • Comfort 95% 95%

Pros

  • 800-lb capacity
  • Soft/cushiony
  • Durable fabric

Cons

  • Requires upright posture
  • Not as breathable on hot days
  • Crossbars can dig into legs

The ALPS Mountaineering King Kong Chair is a favorite among campers for its extreme durability. For instance, the chair can handle an 800-lb capacity thanks to special steel alloys. In addition, the fabric is sure to last the test of time, since it is rated at 600D. This means that you can use, reuse, open, close, pack, unpack, etc as much as you want, without needing to fear wear and tear.

It is a bit on the heavy side, at 13 pounds, though it has a carry bag to make transportation all the easier. Our favorite feature is the extra storage all throughout: two cupholders, two side pockets, and even a pocket on the back of the chair. This should provide plenty of room for your books, phones, keys, tablets, etc.

While it features cushions that feel great on the back, keep in mind that the chair has a bit of an upright position which can feel awkward at first. In addition, we’ve found that the crossbars can sometimes dig into your legs, though it’s easy enough to adjust your legs.

All in all, this is our winning chair, so if you’re looking for a heavy duty camping chair, this is our pick! Happy camping!

  • Frame Durability 87% 87%
  • Weight Capacity 83% 83%
  • Fabric Strength 90% 90%
  • Comfort 98% 98%

Pros

  • Highly breathable fabric
  • Extremely lightweight
  • Great for backpackers

Cons

  • 242-lb capacity
  • Some manual assembly
  • Fabric not as durable

The MOON LENCE Outdoor Ultralight Heavy Duty Folding Chair also made our list. It’s a bit of an anomaly since it is only two pounds, thanks to its aluminum frame! However, for backpackers, this super lightweight chair will also serve as a heavy duty backpacking chair. The fabric is extra durable as well, as it is rated at 600D, making it sure to last a long time.

Our favorite feature of this chair is how breathable the fabric is. It contains a wide surface area of mesh fabric, making hot, breezeless days that much more bearable.

Yet, the weight capacity is rated at only 242 pounds which can pose limitations on some campers. In addition, the chair does require some minor assembly in the form of sliding the cloth over the aluminum bars. Still, it only takes about 30 seconds to assemble, but campers used to simply unfolding their chairs may find this a bit cumbersome.

If you’re a backpacker looking for a lightweight, yet durable chair, this one is our recommendations!

  • Frame Durability 95% 95%
  • Weight Capacity 92% 92%
  • Fabric Strength 95% 95%
  • Comfort 93% 93%

Pros

  • 2-year warranty
  • Lumbar support
  • No-sink chair feet

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Chair legs can break for heavier campers
  • Difficult to open/close

The STRONBACK Elite Heavy Duty Camping Chair is a great pick for any camper! This highly-rated chair is extremely durable, both in terms of its steel frame and its 600D fabric strength. Its weight capacity is only 300 pounds making it a no-go for some campers, but a lot of folks, this will work just fine! If durability is a large concern, you may find some comfort knowing that this chair is backed by a two-year warranty, making it a safe bet.

Our favorite feature is the lumbar support. Nothing beats a nice relaxing weekend in nature without having to worry about whether you will run into back pain. In addition, the chair has wide, no-sink feet making it easy to enjoy a stable sitting on sand, uneven ground, or rough terrain.

A couple of downsides include its weight and usability issues. It’s weight is 11.9 pounds – not too much, but still noticeable when transporting over long distances. The carrying case makes this much easier. We’ve also found that it can occasionally be difficult to open and close. If you run into this, we recommend using WD-40 or some other type of lubricant to make it a bit easier.

We wholeheartedly recommend this product, and are sure that you will enjoy it for years to come. This heavy duty chair will probably leaving you wanting to buy a whole set!

  • Frame Durability 91% 91%
  • Weight Capacity 95% 95%
  • Fabric Strength 96% 96%
  • Comfort 94% 94%

Pros

  • Lots of storage
  • Highly padded
  • Director chair design reduces wobbling

Cons

  • No over-shoulder carry case
  • Not as much back support
  • Moderate comfort

The King Camp Heavy Duty Camping Director’s Chair is one of the most innovative chairs for its design and ample storage. The director chair design offers breathability on hot days thanks to an open back and arms. The seat, arms, and back fabric contain lots of cushion, though, so you don’t trade breathability for cheap, porous fabrics.

The chair is only 9.7 pounds and does not include a carrying case, but once folded, there is a convenient carrying handle making transportation a breeze.

One of the best features of this director chair design is the lack of wobbling compared to traditional camping chairs. You’ll find that it feels much more sturdy and heavy duty, which can be a welcome surprise.

While this chair did not rank top in terms of feature scoring, it is our editor’s favorite, and we highly recommend you check it out!

  • Frame Durability 95% 95%
  • Weight Capacity 97% 97%
  • Fabric Strength 87% 87%
  • Comfort 89% 89%

Pros

  • Large size
  • Padded back/arms
  • Anti-rust frames

Cons

  • Fabric not as durable
  • Heavy
  • Can hurt back of legs

The ALPHA CAMP Oversized Heavy Duty Camping Chair is an excellent choice if you are looking for a heavy duty chair. The chair has a 450-pound weight limit making it a perfect choice for virtually everyone. The steel frame helps guarantee durability over the long haul.

There are plenty of extra storage pockets including two cup holders and two stash packs on either side of the chair arms. In addition, the chair metals are coated in anti-rust protectant giving it an extra layer of “heavy dutyness”. If it’s comfort you want, then it’s comfort you’ll get with the wide seat and padded back and arms.

The fabric is not rated quite as durable as some of the other chairs we reviewed. The rating of 600x300D is still perfectly high-quality however. In addition, due to the chair’s design, we noticed that long periods of sitting can start to make the backs of our legs a little sore, though that’s nothing that a change of position can’t fix!

We think this is a smart buy for any camper seeking a heavy duty camping chair.
